Emily Marye ~ Guest Artist
Emily Marye (pronounced Marie) has been a potter off and on since she was 13 years old. Her career began at Wesleyan Potters in Middletown, CT when she decided her summers needed more substance. Throughout her teens she took classes in the young adult program but lost touch with the medium once college began. Many years, and careers later, a class at the South County Art Association, in Wakefield, RI during the winter of 2008 reconnected her with clay and she began throwing on the wheel once again. Since then it has developed into a full-time passion
Embracing her gypsy lifestyle Emily has had the privilege of working among many talented potters in different studios around the country. She spent two years in Los Angeles at the Xiem Clay Center in Pasadena, CA. The winter of 2012 she was member at Mudflat Clay Studio in Somerville, MA, and for the past four years she has been a full-time member at SCAA.
Emily lives with her husband, Berke Marye, who is the both a chef and painter, here on Block Island six months out of the year. In the off season they live in Providence, RI where Emily spends her winters working out of her studio in Pawtucket, RI making work and expanding her knowledge of clay and firing technics. She enjoys using a variety of clay bodies and glazes, and keeps things interesting by throwing all shapes and sizes of vessels.
