Become a Friend of Spring Street Gallery
Happy Holiday Greetings to all --
The Spring Street Gallery enjoyed a wonderful year in 2023. We continued to offer regular gatherings to celebrate our island and our art. We also welcomed new members, hosted the Block Island students’ art show and were thrilled to host the island’s first Community Art Exhibit this fall. It was great to see islanders, young and old, as they shared their work with our community, some of them for the first time.
Thank you for coming to our events. There is something wonderful in people coming together to share in what we create and what we love.
Like most not-for-profits, we rely on donations and member support to keep going. We would welcome you to join us as a ‘Friend of the Gallery’ by making a donation to help us continue to expand our programs in the coming year.
We appreciate donations of any amount. This summer we began our Birds of a Feather fundraiser. With donations of $50 your name is listed as a Friend on our website as well as on a little wooden bird hanging over our front door. They are a sweet talking point for many coming through our doors.
With a gift of $100 or more you become a BFF. Along with being listed on our website, all family members' names will be listed on the gallery birds and when next you stop by the gallery you can take some birds home with you.
Thank you for your continued support and appreciation of our island artist run creative and community space.
With best wishes from all of us for a warm holiday season. See you in 2024!

Art Reception ~ Jerry Powers
Sat. Sept. 23, 5 - 7 pm at Spring Street Gallery
Jerry has this to say about his work:
“I am a nearsighted person, both literally and figuratively. I can still recall my astonishment when, in my first pair of glasses at age 7, I learned I could make out individual leaves on the top of a tall tree! I still find myself astounded by unplanned encounters with nature, on Block Island and in a few other places I visit with family.
It should not surprise anyone that the paintings in this exhibit are derived from photographs. When I go for a walk or travel, I keep a camera or cellphone in my pocket, but I do not go looking for Art. (Photography has been around long enough to be universally accepted as a Fine Art in its own right, but I am drawn to an alternative, though there are many photographers whose work I love & appreciate.)
So why make paintings? I enjoy the challenge and the learning that come with the process of painting. This is “old school” and messy, both for the hands and the head, but I still find it compelling to conjure up textures, color-mixtures, transparency or opacity and to constantly change the work until it and I are finished.”
Come say hello to Jerry and view his iconic paintings of Block Island on Saturday, Sept. 23, 5 - 7 pm at Spring Street Gallery. His new work will be up until October 9, when the gallery closes for the season. #blockisland #blockislandart #blockislandlife
Join us at The Spring Street Gallery on September 15th from 5:00-8:15 PM to celebrate Block Island Pride with Austin Morin’s Art Happening. Prepare to immerse yourself in a fusion of art, creativity, and celebration. Austin invites all people to come fully dressed in rainbows.
Austin affectionately calls the island his “ancestral salmon stream,” referencing the island’s allure for those who return, akin to salmon coming back to spawn. He found himself stranded on Block Island in 2020 when Japan closed its borders due to global Covid restrictions. Like many others seeking refuge here, the island community warmly embraced him. In the fall, he began working at Persephone’s Kitchen, where he conceived the idea for Block Island Pride with generous support from Persephone Brown and her staff. In 2021, while working for The Nature Conservancy on Block Island as a field biologist, Austin organized Block Island’s first pride event and initiated the Nature Conservancy’s Queerness in Nature Program to educate the community on queer ecology.
This "Happening" will be an immersive experience that encourages viewers to engage with the gallery in a new format. The event will feature paintings, plant displays, Polaroid photography, a pulsating techno set, and a laser display. Austin's installation is a love letter to the island, personal growth, and a fairy tale romance with his partner, Alex. Above all else, this show is about embracing queerness unapologetically and expressing it through art. His paintings are crafted with natural pigments, spices, dirt, and expired paint cans. Austin draws inspiration from Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama’s queer performance art "happenings," which influenced the pop art movement of the 60s and 70s. This installation is a journey to find light and love in darkness, to foster creativity in challenging times, and to continually strive for self-improvement.
Following the gallery reception, attendees are invited to participate in a life drawing class with a nude model led by Katherine Langlands. Tickets for the life drawing class will be available for purchase, with all proceeds going towards supporting the 2024 Block Island Pride.

Art Reception ~ New Work by Katherine Clarke Langlands
Saturday, Sept. 9, 5 - 7 pm at Spring Street Gallery
ENVIRONMENT PAINTINGS, is an iteration of Katherine Clarke Langlands’s most recent and ongoing work, Drifts and Line Paintings.
The exhibition explores an energetic, divergent alchemy of vibrant colors, provocative shapes, organic/inorganic materials, and modified space. The series is further nuanced by an underlying observation of the human experience, human complexity, human intervention, landscape, and the urge to redefine, re-assign, deconstruct, destruct, connect, respond, and ultimately, transform. This will be KCL’s second show at the Spring Street Gallery.
The opening will take place on Saturday September 9, 2023, from 5-7 pm and will be on view until September 21, 2023. All are welcome.
KATHERINE CLARKE LANGLANDS studied studio art and sociology at the University of Vermont and is currently pursuing her MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she presented her thesis exhibition with the Low Residency Program during the summer of 2023. She is a studio resident at the Vermont Studio Center and shares her time between the verdant hills of Stowe, Vermont and the craggy coastline of Block Island, Rhode Island where she and her partner have recently opened Darkside Surf & Skate.

Art Reception ~ Photographs by Lars Trodson
Saturday, Sept. 2, 5 - 7 pm
at Spring Street Gallery
Block Island resident Lars Trodson will have his first-ever show of photographs at The Spring Street Gallery starting with an artist's reception from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Gallery on Saturday, Sept. 2. Everyone is invited to attend. The show will run through Sept. 15.
The show is called "Take A Closer Look," and will feature 10 images.
"I've been taking photos of the island for years. First as the editor and writer for the Block Island Times, but more recently just for the simple pleasure of it," said Trodson, who is currently a manager at The Spring House Hotel.
"It's hard to take a bad picture on Block Island, but since I love the island at night I started to look for images after the sun had set. I'm also interested in patterns, and a few of the images will be just the arrangement of objects that caught my eye. I'd like to thank Aleksandar Baba-Vulic, who took the time to print these images. His generosity is greatly appreciated," said Trodson. The images will be no larger than 10 x 12 inches in order to invite the viewer to lean in and take a look at the details in each of the landscapes or objects.

Art Reception for Jenny Noonan
and Robin B. Langsdorf
Saturday ~ August 26, 5 - 7 pm
Colors of Our World
For some time Jenny and Robin have enjoyed a warm and engaging friendship here on Block Island. Several years ago, Jenny started painting the beauty that surrounds her and shared the enthusiastic joy it brings her with Robin, who as a photographer and member, heads the guest artist program at the Spring Street Gallery. This led to two successful guest artist shows in the gallery where Jenny showed her landscape and floral paintings.
Last fall, after a private showing of Jenny’s recent work, Robin was inspired by the vibrant color Jenny likes to use and saw the possibility of creating a colorful collaboration including some of the flowers, specifically dahlias Robin has been growing in her on-island garden. Working together has been a meaningful and joyful shared experience.
Jenny and Robin invite you to join them in celebration of painting, photography, flowers and friendship at their opening reception on Saturday, August 26 in the Spring Street Gallery, 5-7pm. The show will remain open daily through September 7. A portion of all proceeds from our show will be donated to support the small business owners affected by the Harborside fire. #blockisland #blockislandart #blockislandartists #blockislandartgallery #rhodeisland #rhodeisland #photography #blockislandphotographer

"Contours" ~~ Mixed Media Drawings & Textile Art by Elizabeth Doherty
Opening Reception: Saturday, Aug. 19th, 5 - 7 Spring Street Gallery
Elizabeth Doherty is set to unveil a new body of work at Spring Street Gallery, showcasing a collection of small compositions and clothing that delve into the realms of color, dimension, line, and connection. The exhibition's opening reception welcomes all on Saturday, August 19th, from 5 to 7pm.
Drawing inspiration from topographical maps and their interplay with materials and surfaces, this creative venture, titled "Contours," employs various textile dying and fabric resist techniques to forge connections within abstracted landscapes. The show will encompass mixed media drawings, textile art, and a select assortment of wearables featured at Elizabeth’s shop in town, Traveling Seamstress.
Elizabeth Doherty lives and works on Block Island. She currently works and teaches sewing and fabric dying workshops from her workroom in the heart of town. Her background is in fibers and mixed media receiving instruction at The University of the Arts and The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. This is her second exhibition at the Spring Street Gallery.
"Contours" runs from August 18th until the end of the month at the Spring Street Gallery. For more information about the selection of work, please contact: elizabeth.f.doherty@gmail.com
